Netflix gears up for the holiday season with 3 festive movies

September 30, 2020

Netflix is getting ready for holidays with some festive original movies.

The streaming giant released several sneak peeks from its upcoming Christmas movie roster.

One of the most buzzed about offerings is “The Holidate” starring “Scream Queens” actress Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey.

The romantic comedy finds Roberts’ Sloane annoyed with the constant prying into her relationship status every holiday, so she takes advice from her aunt and makes a pact with Bracey’s Jackson that they will be each other’s “holidate” for every upcoming event. Of course, as they begin spending more time together, they realize that romance may be on the horizon.

You can welcome the holidays early as the film premieres on October 28.

Netflix is giving Hallmark, which is debuting a total of 40 new holiday films this year, a run for its money with a holiday musical movie titled “Dolly Parton’s Christmas On the Square.”

″#ChristmasOnTheSquare is more than just a song...it’s also a musical! Watch my newest movie, directed by @msdebbieallen and starring Christine Baranski, @JeniferLewis and so many other talented folks, November 22 on @netflixfamily,″ Parton wrote on Twitter.

Variety notes that the film follows Regina Fuller (Baranski), a Scrooge-like figure who sets out to evict residents of her hometown after her father's death. The 74-year-old country legend plays an angel who breaks through to Fuller by infusing the protagonist with holiday cheer.

The film also stars “Everwood” actor Treat Williams and “Roswell, New Mexico” star Jeanine Mason.

The movie, which debuts Sunday, November 22, shares a title with a new song on Parton’s upcoming Christmas album, “A Holly Dolly Christmas.” It will be her first Christmas album in 30 years.

The streaming giant seems to have take a liking to musical movies with “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey.”

Written by playwright and director David E. Talbert, it tells the story of an eccentric inventor Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) and his granddaughter Journey (Madalen Mills).

Keegan-Michael Key, Anika Noni Rose, and Justin Cornwell are also part of the diverse cast. The film's music was written by John Legend.

It will debut November 13.

Netflix’s holiday lineup is already packed, so you’ll have plenty to watch this magical season.
